TEHRAN (FNA)- An explosion in the Northwestern parts of Syria killed 28 senior commanders of Ahrar Al-Sham, including the chief commander of the foreign-backed terrorist group, the militant group said on its web site.

A statement posted on Ahrar al-Sham’s official Twitter account said the blast had hit a meeting in Idlib province in Northwestern Syria and confirmed Hassan Aboud, the group’s leader, among at least 12 dead.

The explosion took place in Ram Hamdan town in the Northern countryside of Idlib.

“We don’t know the cause of the explosion yet,” Abu Mustafa al-Absi, a member of Ahrar al-Sham said. “We do not rule out the infiltration of elements who were able to plant a bomb.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said some 50 of the group’s leaders had gathered at a house when the blast went off. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory, said the blast had occurred inside the meeting.

Ahrar al-Sham is part of the Islamic Front alliance that has been in armed conflict with the Syrian government and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) which has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.

Also in the past 24 hours, the Syrian Armed Forces carried out a series of fresh operations against the militants in the countryside of Quneitra on Tuesday, killing and wounding a large number of them.

The Syrian soldiers inflicted heavy losses upon the militants in Om Batina town, storming their hideouts and destroying a number of their cars.

Syrian soldiers carried out a series of clean-up operations against the foreign-backed rebels in the countryside of Daraa and Damascus, storming their hideouts and killing scores of them.

Meantime, a military source said that the Syrian soldiers killed many rebels in the Southern parts of Zamrin and Nawa towns in Daraa countryside.

The gathering center of the militants in Inkhel town was also targeted and many militants lost their lives.

Tens of terrorists were killed and dozens more injured during the army attacks on the militants’ positions in Arzeh and Bel-Hossein towns in a series of operations yesterday.

Syria’s Permanent Envoy to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari condemned UN failure to protect children or reveal violations committed against them by the terrorist groups in the crisis-hit country.

Al-Jaafari said in a speech at a Security Council session titled “Children in the armed conflict” that the terrorist organizations are training the children to carry weapons and feel hatred in the regions where Terrorists have control on, after making a brainwash for them.

“We haven’t seen any tangible step by the UN to protect the children or to uncover the violations against the Syrian children at the hands of terrorists,” he said.

Al-Jaafari assured that Syria has taken all possible measures to protect children and issued many laws in this regards since the beginning of the crisis in the country.

“The Syrian government issued a legislative decree on May 6th, 2013 for this purpose and took all possible means to avoid targeting the hospitals, schools and to overcome all forms of violence against Syrian children including sex violence and killing,” he said.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
