Putin: Radical Groups Once Employed by West Main Threat for Syria, Middle East
TEHRAN (FNA)- The situation in Syria remains source of serious concern, and the activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other radical groups are the main risk for the further aggravation of the situation in the country and neighboring states, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview.

“The situation in Syria remains source of serious concern. And we are fully aware of the burden imposed on Turkey by the on-going violent conflict ravaging your neighbors,” Putin said in an interview with Turkey’s Anadolu agency ahead of his visit to Turkey, Itar-Tass reported.

“What is more, the main risk of further aggravation of the situation both in this country and in neighboring states stems from the activities of the so-called Islamic State (of Iraq and the Levant) and other radical groups that were once actively employed by some western countries, which flirted with them and encouraged them,” he said.

The President said “from the very onset of the Syrian crisis Russian has consistently exerted efforts towards its peaceful political settlement by the Syrians themselves based on the Geneva Communiqué of June 30, 2012, meaning through internal dialogue without any preconditions or dictates from the outside.”

“We believe that the rise of terrorist groups in Syria and in the Middle East in general require consolidation of all robust forces of Syrian society – consolidation for the future of Syria as a sovereign, united, secular and democratic state where equal rights for all ethnic and confessional groups are guaranteed and everyone can enjoy peace and security,” the Russian leader said.

“We will continue to do everything necessary to help the Syrian people to overcome the tragic events and find peace and harmony as soon as practicably possible. This is the purpose of our contacts with the Syrian government, various opposition groups, our international and regional partners, including, of course, our Turkish colleagues,” he said.

The Russian president said the fight against terrorists in the Middle East is one of the key priorities for the international community.

“We consider the fight against terrorists and extremists in the Middle East and North Africa, including naturally Syria, a region struck by upheavals, a priority task for the international community,” Putin said.

“We are convinced that the efforts to deter this threat should be based on the UN Security Council resolutions, strict compliance with international law, the principles of state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs of states in the first place. And what is important – this should be done transparently and without any hidden agenda,” he said, assuring that Russia will continue providing further support to the governments of Syria, Iraq and other regional states countering extremists.

Putin said it is important to address numerous regional problems comprehensively, based on an in-depth analysis of threats existing in the Middle East and North African region in all their complexity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia will continue providing support and assistance to Syria, Iraq and other countries in the region in their efforts to confront terrorism.

“The situation in Syria still raises serious concern,” said Putin in an interview with the Turkish al-Anadolu news agency.

He pointed out that the major threat in Syria and neighboring countries is that of the acts of ISIS and the other extremist organizations which some western countries have placed bets on and emboldened.

Efforts to fight this terror threat, the Russian President stressed, should be based on the international Security Council’s resolutions and strictly compliant with the international law, particularly the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

These efforts, Putin said, must be carried out transparently and without any “covert” agenda.

Putin also reiterated his country’s stance calling for finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria by the Syrians themselves and through an inter-Syrian national dialogue without preconditions.

President Putin affirmed that Russia will continue doing whatever necessary to help the Syrian people overcome “the tragic events” to which they are exposed and to reach a political solution.

He pointed out that the contacts Moscow is making with representatives of the Syrian government and the various opposition groups and the regional and international partners, including the Turks, aim at getting to solve the crisis in Syria.

He asserted the need that all efforts of the forces of the Syrian society against the terrorist organizations be united so as to maintain Syria’s unity, sovereignty and independence.
