According to Saudi and Syrian officials familiar with Middle Eastern politics, Saudi Arabia and Syria reached an agreement to resume diplomatic relations after negotiations that were mediated by Russia. As a result of this dramatic change in the geopolitics of the Middle East that followed the security deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran brokered by China, the United States is once again on the sidelines.

Following rounds of conversations in recent weeks in Moscow and Riyadh, the deal would be a significant step toward Syria and its leader Bashar al-Assad’s integration into the region following a bloody regime change war initiated by the CIA in 2011.
