Ukraine Threatens Syria with Sanctions after Recognition of DPR and LPR

On 29 June 2022, Syria officially announced that it recognized the sovereignty of the DPR and LPR (Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics), triggering the wrath of Ukraine, which now threatens Damascus with sanctions.

Less than two weeks after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gave instructions to start the procedure for the recognition of the DPR and the LPR by Syria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced that Damascus recognized the sovereignty of the two Donbass republics.

“Embodying the common will and desire to establish relations in all fields, the Syrian Arab Republic has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Lugansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the ministry statement said.

A decision welcomed by the head of the LPR, Leonid Passetchnik, on his Telegram channel.

This decision was officially confirmed by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry the following day.

“Ukraine announces the termination of diplomatic relations with Syria without breaking consular relations, in accordance with Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The Ukrainian side is also initiating the procedure for the introduction of a trade embargo against Syria, as well as the imposition of other sanctions against Syrian legal and natural persons,” the statement said.

Except that Ukraine already closed its embassy in Damascus in 2016 and ordered the closure of the Syrian embassy in Kiev in 2018, and given the state of the Ukrainian economy, threatening the Syrian Arab Republic with sanctions is most laughable.

Moreover, as political scientist Aleksandr Dudchak, an expert at the CIS Institute, points out, Syria’s recognition of the DPR and LPR is certainly not the last.

“This very fact shows that not everything in this world is done under the dictation of the US. There are enough countries that want to live according to their own ideas on how to build their future and their relations with other countries. I think that other countries intend to follow the same logic,” said the political scientist.

It is as if Kiev has not finished screaming…
