Syrian Army Surrounds Al-Tabaqah

TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Russian expert revealed that the US plans to set up a military base in al-Tabaqa region in Raqqa province, and said that the Syrian army has almost surrounded the town.

In a recent analysis published by Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper, Vladimir Mukhin, a Moscow-based military expert, referred to certain Syrian sources’ reports that the US has agreed with the Kurdish forces to establish a military base in al-Tabaqa, and said the region is of vital importance to the US.

He added that the town has one airbase and the fighter jets stationed in the airport support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Raqqa operations.

Mukhin also referred to the Syrian army’s operations in Western Raqqa, and said Damascus doesn’t intend to confront the Kurdish forces which is evident by taking a look at the map of the military operations in the region.

He added that the US rejected Russia’s proposal in autumn 2016 for joint operations against terrorists in Syria and it not only supported separatist moves in Syria by strengthening the SDF, but also prevents the Syrian government from regaining control over the gas and oil fields in conflict zones with ISIL, which, he said, boosts the importance of al-Tabaqa airbase yet more.

On one hand, the Syrian government and its allies are conducting military operations against the ISIL positions from Aleppo and the regions along the right bank of the Euphrates river and have been able to advance to al-Tabaqa and almost surround it.

On the other hand, they could drive the Kurdish forces out of the energy fields near al-Tabaqa.

At present, the Syrian army can advance to two strategic regions; first to the East, meaning the positions supported by Washington and second, towards the Southeast, meaning Deir Ezzur, Mukhin said.

But, most possibly, the Syrian army forces will continue to advance towards Deir Ezzur on the Western bank of the Euphrates to reach the oil fields, he added.
