The Syrian Arab Republic delegation headed by Bashar al-Jaafari arrived on Monday at the Kazakh capital of Astana to participate in the fourth round of Astana meetings on the crisis in Syria which is due to be held on May 3-4.
Astana has hosted three rounds of talks on Syrian settlement, which were held on January 23-24, February 15-16, and March 14-15.

UN envoy for Syria to attend Syria talks in Astana
The 4th international conference on Syria will take place in Kazakhstan’s capital on May 3 and 4
GENEVA, May 1. /TASS/. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will attend the talks on Syria in Kazakhstan’s Astana on May 3-4, a diplomatic source told TASS on Monday.
“The special envoy and his deputy, Ramzi Izz Eddin Ramzi, will take part in the meeting in Astana on May 3-4,” he said. “The envoy’s representatives led by Milos Strugar, who are permanent representatives at Astana, are already in Kazakhstan’s capital and will be participating in bilateral consultations on May 2.”
The 4th international conference on Syria will take place in Kazakhstan’s capital on May 3 and 4. On May 2, experts are due to hold bilateral consultations. The previous, third, conference on Syria was held in Astana on March 14-15. Delegations of Russia, Iran and Turkey, which had brokered a nationwide ceasefire in Syria, took part in the negotiations alongside the Syrian government delegation and experts from the United Nations, United States and Jordan.
UN, US and Jordan to take part in Astana talks as observers
ASTANA, /TASS/. The United Nations, the United States and Jordan have confirmed that their representatives will participate in the Astana international meeting on Syria as observers, Kazakhstan’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said on Tuesday.
“Observers will remain the same,” he said.
“A high-level delegation from the United Nations will come, as UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has confirmed his participation. Jordan will also take part while the United States will be represented by an assistant secretary of state,” Tleuberdi added.
Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Syrian armed opposition will take part in the international meeting on Syria this time:
“Yes, they have confirmed (their participation). We are waiting for them. They are to arrive within the next few hours,” the minister said when asked about the possibility of the Syrian opposition’s participation in the talks.
According to Tleuberdi, “all those who were invited have confirmed their participation.”
“As many as 16 representatives of various groups have arrived in Astana.”
Officials said earlier that Mohammed Alloush headed the Syrian armed opposition delegation.
