The army takes full control of Palmyra city
27 March، 2016
A military source announced on Sunday that the army units, in cooperation with the popular defense groups, have established full control over Palmyra city-a UNESCO world heritage site- in the eastern countryside of Homs province.
“Palmyra city is now fully cleared of ISIS terrorists after the army established complete control over all its parts, including the archeological site and the airport,” the source said in a statement to SANA.
The army’s engineering units have immediately embarked on combing the city, finding and dismantling hundreds of bombs and explosive devices planted by ISIS terrorists between the ancient relics, houses and orchards, the source mentioned.
It confirmed that hundreds of terrorists were killed in the course of the battles that started on March 7th, noting that the remaining terrorists fled eastward deep into al-Badiya (desert).
Sources on the ground estimated the number of ISIS terrorists killed in the battles at 450, pointing out that those included foreign mercenaries who had earlier infiltrated Palmyra city from the directions of Raqqa, Deir Ezzor and the Iraqi borders.
The military source went on saying that the army units and the popular defense groups have hunted down ISIS terrorists on the outskirts of Palmyra city and the surrounding orchards, inflicting heavy losses upon them.
The source added that the Syrian and Russian Air Forces carried out sorties targeting the remaining ISIS terrorists on the axes of Palmyra/al-Sukhneh, Palmyra/al-Mahatta al-Thaletha, Palmyra /Tweinan and al-Rasafa/al-Tabaqa.
Tens of vehicles, including armored ones, were destroyed in the airstrikes, which also left dozens of the fleeing terrorists dead or wounded, according to the source.
Later, Army units established control over points 850 and 849 in the direction of al- Hazem al-Thani and Point 876 in the direction of al-Rmeileh Mountain to the north west of al-Qariyatain in the south eastern countryside of Homs, according to a military source.
The source added that engineering units dismantled a number of explosive devices which ISIS terrorists planted earlier in the area.
Another army unit foiled an infiltration attempt by ISIS terrorists in the direction of Tolol Nizami in the area surrounding Shaer Field in the eastern countryside of Homs, killing many terrorists, injuring many others and destroying their weapons and ammunition.
Army Command praises Palmyra victory, stresses Syrian army is the only force capable of eradicating terrorism
27 March، 2016
The General Command of the Army and Armed Forces confirmed Sunday that Palmyra city and the mountains and hills overlooking it have now been under the army’s full control.
Security and stability were restored to Palmyra following a series of “precise and effective” military operations that were carried out by the army units with the help of the popular defense groups, being backed by the Syrian and Russian Air Forces, the Army Command said in a statement.
ISIS terrorist organization “has been dealt quite a severe blow” with Palmyra getting in the army’s hands, said the Army Command, adding that this achievement has the effect of hitting hard ISIS terrorists’ morale and pressing the start button of the organization’s collapse and defeat.
This achievement proves that “our brave army, aided by the friends, is the only effective force capable of fighting terrorism and eradicating it,” the statement said.
The Army Command clarified that the importance of today’s achievement stems from the significant strategic location of Palmyra city being a major link connecting the central, southern, eastern and northern areas, and from the historical and tourist status of the city as it stands witness to one of the most ancient human civilizations ever.
With Palmyra city under control, military operations against ISIS will expand starting from this springboard towards various axes and directions, on top being Deir Ezzor and Raqqa, especially that this victory helps in further tightening the noose around ISIS terrorists and cutting off their supply routes in the areas under their control until having these areas fully restored, the statement explained.
The statement made it clear that the army, together with the popular defense groups and the Russian and Syrian Air Forces, will go ahead with military operations against ISIS and Jabhat al- Nusra and other terrorist organizations.
Emergency plan set to rehabilitate Palmyra
27 March، 2016
“Re-constructing some vandalized ruins is possible despite the ultimate losses that are archeologically irredeemable in terms of genuineness” (REPORT)
Primary ideations for a rehabilitation plan to restore glory of Palmyra have been set up after the archeological city was cleared of terrorists by the Army, the Director General of Antiquities and Museums Directorate (DGAM) said on Sunday.
“Re-constructing some vandalized ruins is possible in spite of “the ultimate losses that are archeologically irredeemable in terms of genuineness,” DGAM Director-General Maamoun Abdul –Karim added.
The Syrian Army has retaken the archeological city of Palmyra- a UNESCO world Heritage site- and eliminated ISIS terrorists’ posts after they had perpetrated acts of vandalism to many prominent sites in the desert city.
Experts will estimate the volume of damage on a field visit in the upcoming days for making emergency works and setting up strategies for rehabilitating monuments such as Palmyra Castle and re-building the temples of Baalshamin and Bel, the Arch of Triumph and the funerary towers, which were demolished by ISIS terrorists last year.
“The general and known viewpoint prefers not to re-build antiquities but in the case of Palmyra it is different …We seek to restore the devastated temples in a way that preserves its historical identity depending on the original stones remaining in the site or bringing new identical ones from he city’s quarry,” Abdul-Karim said.
“A unique symbolism is now added to the world-famous historical city after having defied terrorism,” DGAM Director-General said in reference to Palmyra’s newly acquired terror-challenging symbol, clarifying that rehabilitating works will be carried out with the aim of having these antiquities witnesses to the terror atrocities.
DGAM has a qualified staff of construction engineers and archeologists of high scientific competence and good experience in the archeological restoration and the rehabilitation of archeological buildings after events such as war and catastrophes.
DGAM will carry out works of rehabilitation and restoration in cooperation with local and international partners from the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).
“It is worth mentioning,” Abdul-Karim said, “that 70 years ago, DGAM carried out rehabilitation works under the supervision of Archeologist Khaled al-Asaad, an iconic figure from the ancient city who was decapitated by ISIS terrorists last year.”
On 19 of April, a monument of Palmyra Arch of Triumph will be put in London Square. The six-meter high monument- weighing 12 tons – has been designed by the Institute of Digital Archeology at Oxford University in coordination with the DGAM and it is to tour several world cities including New York before it is finally placed in Syria.
Abdel-karim pointed out that the DGAM rehabilitated numerous archaeological sites after the Syrian Arab Army restored security and stability to the areas containing them, such as Krak des Chevaliers, not to mention restoration work implemented in Ma’aloula and the Old City in Homs.

Palmyra Liberation: Syrian Army Officer Reveals Details of Operation
Earlier today the Syrian Army together with the Desert Falcons fully liberated the ancient city of Palmyra from Daesh militants. A Syrian field commander told RT the details of the operation.
“Preparations for the liberation of Palmyra were made for a little over than a month. The Syrian Army was re-grouping its soldiers. The army made communications with the Syrian Air Force and especially with the Russian Air Force. Tanks and other military vehicles were brought to Palmyra together with Syrian troops and their allies,” the military said.
According to the Syrian officer, the main task was to take control of Palmyra heights.
“Last night, we managed to take control of Palmyra’s ancient fortress. Then we prepared to take over the city. Daesh terrorists blew up a bridge that leads to the fortress. That’s why our infantry had to enter the city from the north side under the cover of artillery fire and tanks to eventually liberate these areas,” the officer told RT.
During the Palmyra assault, Russian attack helicopters and reconnaissance assets played a major role.
“Russia’s engagement was very important and played one of the key roles in liberating Palmyra. Russian aviation, particularly attack helicopters, destroyed terrorists’ ambushes at the heights around Palmyra. Using Russian intelligence data, we located terrorists and could track them,” General Samir Suleiman told Sputnik.
He underscored that the liberation of Palmyra is a serious blow to terrorists’ logistical and supplying capabilities. According to Suleiman, Palmyra was a supplies hub for the terrorists.
Palmyra, located 210 kilometers away from Damascus, is considered key for advancing to the Daesh stronghold of Raqqa in eastern Syria. The town of Palmyra and its historic ruins have been under Daesh control since May 2015. The terrorist group has since destroyed part of the historic sites, which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Desert Falcons Thank Vladimir Putin for Support in Liberation of Palmyra
A field commander of Syria’s Desert Falcons militia forces thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin on behalf of the Syrian people for supporting the country in the fight against terrorism.
Earlier on Sunday, the Syrian Army alongside the Desert Falcons forces fully liberated the ancient city of Palmyra from Daesh militants. A field commander of the unit in an interview with RT thanked Russia for another major victory over terrorists.
He also spoke about the operation which ended with the liberation of the ancient city.
“There were several stages in the operation. Our forces surrounded the city and regained control over it. The problem was that terrorists laid a lot of mines on the roads,” the commander said.
According to him, some roads have been cleared of mines, but the work is still underway.
“We thank President Putin for this victory. He has supported our country and our army while other countries are supporting terrorists. On behalf of our government and our people, we thank Russia very much,” he added.
Now, the Syrian Army and its allies are expected to advance on Raqqa, the de-facto capital of the Daesh “caliphate.”
During the Palmyra assault, Russian attack helicopters and reconnaissance assets played major role, Gen. Samir Suleiman told Sputnik.
“Russia’s engagement was very important and played one of the key roles in liberating Palmyra. The Russian aviation, particularly attack helicopters, destroyed terrorists’ ambushes at the heights around Palmyra. Using Russian intelligence data, we located terrorists and could track them,” the general said.
