A story from SyAAF archives during 1982 Lebanon war

SyAAF used MiG-25 Recon variant to locate Israeli tanks positions in Lebanon, and even cross into North Palestinian airspace. The recon missions were conducted several time a day. However, only one actual mission used to take place, and the remaining were decoy, the actual recon mission used to be conducted at a specific time every morning at 0600 hours.

Then the MiG-25s relay the locations to SyAAF command. From that point, and based on the recon data, SyAAF operated Gazelle helicopters raid the tanks positions, and destroy them.

After many successful raids, the Zionists figured out the relationship between the use of the MiG-25 and the Gazelles.

On one MiG-25 mission, Zionist had 4 fighters ready to ambush the Syrian MiG-25s; upon arriving to the mission site, the Zionist fighters climbed from low altitude to intercept the MiG-25.

Unlike what it is known in the media, the Syrian MiG-25 variants are equipped with an Defensive ECM, the pilot activated it and continued his mission, as the Zionists were unable to shoot him from beyond visual range, and he concluded that by the time they reach a range of which they can attack him, his mission will be over, and he will be either on route of already reached the Syrian Air Defense umbrella utilizing the speed of his MiG-25.

A formation of SyAAF MiG-25 interceptors were given an order to take off to protect the recon mission.

The Zionists reinforced the attack with another 4-fighters formation, the pilot at this point changed course back to his base; at that time, the first formation reached an infrared lock range, and launched a missile. The missile exploded next to the MiG-25 in the air, causing damage to the MiG-25, including the cockpit, the pilot was even injured in his shoulder.

However, the pilot managed to get back to SyAAF and Air Defense umbrella; and from there back to al-Seen airbase.

The MiG-25 was repaired, and restored to service, the MiG-25`s serial number in SyAAF is 2701.
The Syrian MiG-25 fleet is not export-variants, it is not all decommissioned, and it is not disclosed, nor we will disclose the variants of the MiG-25s sent to Syria.

It is true that the SyAAF did not force a total domination over the sky in 1982 Lebanon war, but there are reasons behind that, which we will disclose; furthermore, we will disclose some previously classified information, and even pictures if cleared regarding that war.
