Deputy Chief of Flight Safety Service of the Russian Armed Forces Lt.Gen. Sergei Baynetov told about first results of working with flight recorder of the Russian Su-24M downed by fighter of the Turkish Air Force over Syria

Deputy Chief of Flight Safety Service of the Russian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Sergei Baynetov told about first results of working with flight recorder of the Russian Su-24M downed over Syria by Turkish Air Force fighter:

On December 18, the work started with visual inspection of the flight recorder. It was determined that the recorder’s body had a penetrating damage up to inner container. An electric cable of the emergency recorder was cut off.

In the course of X-ray investigation it was determined that most of microchips were destroyed. Three chips were damaged.

Therefore, recovering and reading the flight information of the microchips with using methods and standard equipment of manufacturer Interstate Aviation Committee #IAC is impossible at the moment because of the internal damages.

The commission considers involving specialized R&D Institutes of the Russian Federation, which are capable to extract the information from the microchip silicon.

Regrettably, this work will take rather long period of time. Everything necessary will be done in order to complete this task. The public will be informed about the working process in a regular manner.

The work was headed by members of commission on air accident investigation from the manufacturer in cooperation with IAC representatives and international observers: senior engineer of the R&D Institute of the Air Force of People’s Liberation Army of China Lu Chang Wei, councilor of Director General of the Gates Aviation Ltd, and citizen of United Kingdom Jonathan Gillespie.

The international observers did not make any claims concerning the working process. The work transparency was highly assessed.

Moscow: Europe and Turkey closed airspace for Russian Long-Range Aviation planes

Moscow, SANA
Russian-airplanes-aircraft-airstrikesDeputy Commander of the Russian Air Force Maj. Gen. Anatoly Konovalov said Europe and Turkey closed airspace for Russian Long-Range Aviation planes carrying out airstrikes on terrorist positions in Syria.

Sputnik news agency quoted Konovalov as saying that this measure has forced Russian pilots to reroute.

According to Konovalov, Russian pilots had to leave for Syria from Russia’s northernmost Olenegorsk military airport in order to bypass Europe and then cross the Mediterranean Sea towards Syria, taking a route outside Europe airspace.

He downplayed the Turkish and European decisions, asserting that even in such conditions, Russia’s Long-Range Aviation proved its capability to perform the assigned tasks.

“We’ve carried out about 145 sorties in total, dropped over 1,500 bombs and fired about 20 air-launched cruise missiles,” Konovalov explained.
