Istanbul : Protesters Confront Police Following Targeted Assassination of Kurdish Lawyer

Footage from the scene where Diyarbakır Bar Association Head Tahir Elçi was shot dead in Amed’s Sur district Saturday noon, show that policemen deliberately targeted the lawyers and press members in the area.

The video footage shows that several policemen standing before Elçi and press members firstly fire on a group of people as they gather across the scene. Policemen suddenly turn towards Elçi’s group and start to fire on them.

Two policemen are seen to be opening fire towards Elçi, which leaves him lying on the ground with a bullet shot in the head.

Lawyer Ercan Kanar has described the murder of Diyarbakır Bar Association Head Tahir Elçi as a planned attack.

Remarking that the targeting of head of a bar association is related with the AKP’s pro-civil war policies, lawyer Kanar said; “This is a heinous murder and brutal state attack that must be treated as a crime against humanity.”

Kanar recalled that Elçi had been prosecuted one month ago for saying “PKK is not a terrorist organsation”, saying that this heinous assassination must be evaluated as a part of the crime against humanity committed in Cizre, Nusaybin and Silvan.

Responding to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s comment that “Murder of Elçi has proved the righteousness of Turkey’s commitment to fight against terror”, Kanar said the followings; “The President has the biggest responsibility for the current atmosphere which was provoked by him himself. Dragging the country to a civil war, downing the Russian jet, arresting Can Dündar and attacking the people in Silvan, Nusaybin and Cizre are all a practice of Erdoğan’s avenge for his failure to become Executive President. The government will now make demagocial statements to cover up its own offence and evade responsibility.”

Istanbul Bar Association Head Ümit Kocasakal has also reacted to the murder of Tahir Elçi, which he said is a shocking and unacceptable incident.

DBP (Party of Democratic Regions) Headquarters has called for uninterrupted protest in response to the murder of Diyarbakır Bar Head Tahir Elçi in Amed’s central Sur district earlier today.

Drawing attention to the ongoing state terror in Kurdistan, DBP said; “The state’s policy of massacre persists without interruption. The policy of systematic massacre has proved itself to be limitless and wide open with the murder of Amed Bar Head Tahir Elçi in Amed’s Sur district.”

Recalling that human rights defender Elçi has been pointed as a target by the AKP government, its judiciary and press for a while because of his remarks, DBP noted that he Elçi been assassinated today following a press release against the ruining of the Four Footed Minaret and other historical structures in Amed’s Sur district.

DBP said the systematic attacks of the AKP government continue to claim lives across Kurdistan territory, mainly in Cizre, Silvan, Nusaybin, Derik, Gever and Silopi.

Party of Democratic Regions Headquarters ended its statement by calling upon all provincial, district and town organisations and the public opinion to take action against the practices of massacre targeting the people, to say ‘Êdî Bes e’ [Enough] to the policies of genocide, and to stage uninterrupted protest.
