ISIS blows up Baalshamin Temple in Palmyra
24 August، 2015
Islamic State in Iraq and Syria “ISIS” terrorist organization blew up Baalshamin Temple at the northern neighborhood of the ancient city of Palmyra.
ISIS imposes strict restrictions on locals of Palmyra since June 20th, and prevents them from leaving the city after cutting off all means of communications.
Director of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) Maamoun Abdelkarim told SANA Sunday night that local sources told him that ISIS terrorists blew up Baalshamin Temple by a large amount of explosives they brought into the temple and detonated it.
The site dates back to the first century AD, and has survived numerous invaders and occupiers. It is seen as one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
DGAM is trying to contact locals of Palmyra to get information about the destruction of the Temple which dates back to 17 AD, Abdulkarim added, denouncing ISIS’ “systematic genocide war” and mass massacres against the locals.
“ISIS is bringing in archeological thieves to destroy antiquities by excavation of antiquities, looting and selling them”, Abdul karim said.
Later, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) condemned the demolition of Baalshamin Temple.
Head of the UNESCO Irina Bokova said in a statement on Monday that this act is a war crime and a tragic loss for both the Syrian people and for humanity as a whole, stressing that the perpetrators of this crime must be punished.
Bokova said that ISIS is murdering people and destroying sites, but it can never silence history and will eventually fail in its attempts to erase cultures from the world’s memory.
The destruction of the temple, which is considered the second most important monuments in Palmyra, raises concerns over the fate of other sites listed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and comes only a few days after the murder by beheading of former Director of Archeology in Palmyra Khaled al-Assad at the hands of ISIS.

A leaked CIA document published by WND.com in 2013 stated that terrorists in Syria affiliated with Al Qaeda possessed and manufactured sarin gas for the purpose of using it in attacks against civilians in Syria.
Ancient Mar Elian Monastery in Homs bulldozed by ISIS
22 August، 2015
Terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have bulldozed Mar Elian Monastery on the western outskirts of al-Qaryatein city, 85 km from the central city of Homs.
According to local sources, terrorists used bulldozers to raze the 1,500-year-old monastery, leaving it completely flattened.
The monastery, which dates back to the 4th century AD, is deemed a center for interfaith dialogue in the heart of al-Qaryrtein city. It is also a key refuge for displaced people who fled terrorist organizations.
Father Phillip Barakat told SANA that ISIS crime is condemned by all faiths and human and divine laws, lamenting the destruction of the monastery that housed scores of displaced families.
Mar Elian is also the place where priest Jacques Mourad was abducted back in May. Mourad was known to help both Christians and Muslims and was preparing aid for the arrival of hundreds of refugees from Palmyra.
In a statement to SANA, director of the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) Ma’moun Abdelkarim said that the act of bulldozing Mar Elian Monastery by ISIS is a crime that seeks to wipe out pages from Syria’s history.
He said that bulldozing a religious site that had been standing unharmed since the 5th century AD shows how far ISIS has gone with its criminal acts, and that the fact that such an act occurred in the 21st century is unimaginable.
ISIS has already destroyed more than 90 % of Islamic shrines in the eastern and northeastern areas acting upon ideological motives stemming from their Takfiri mentality, Abdelkarim noted.
Besides those, he added, ISIS has destroyed tens of churches and Christian holy places in the eastern provinces of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
ISIS has a bleak track record of destroying and bombing out Muslim and Christian places of worship which it views as opposed to its religious beliefs. The fate of Mar Elian Monastery was previously visited on the Virgin Mary church in Hasaka, Muhammad bin Ali and Abu Bahaaeddin shrines in Palmyra and al-Rawi Tekkiye in Deir Ezzor.
