Just like in Libya, the recent murder of the son of the head of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party give us a bitter glimpse into what life in Syria would be like should the west’s goal of “regime” change were achieved. Ismael Ali Haidar, the son of Ali Haidar, was assassinated today along with his friend Fadi Aatawneh in the wake of his father’s recent trip to Russia where he met with officials to discuss solutions to the current crisis.

The steadfastness of the Syrian people was exemplified in the words of his father: “I don’t need condolences over the deaths of my son and his comrade, because their blood is no more precious than the blood of any Syrian that was martyred before or will be martyred in the coming days…Ismael and his comrade are the victims of terrorism that is afflicting Syria…they, like the rest of the martyrs, fell so that Syria may live, for Syria’s interest is above all interests.” The targeting of important figures that oppose the NATO backed insurgents, and the assassination of their families, are identical to the murders that took place against people who publicly opposed the Libyan rebels’ agenda during NATO’s eight-month bombing campaign. One of the most high profile of such cases was the Sorman massacre where Khaled El-Khweldi El-Hamedi’s entire family were murdered by NATO rockets after the media falsely alleged that he was leading a militia that was targeting protesters. Never mind that such an allegation is in itself an abhorrent justification for the massacre of Mr Hamedi’s pregnant wife, two small children and more than 10 others, the real reason behind the massacre was that Mr Hamedi is the son of Khweldi El-Hamedi, who was part of the original Revolutionary core that overthrew the west’s puppet King Idris in 1969. And so this was a politically motivated massacre clearly designed to terrorise Muammar Gaddafi and the Jamahiriyah government’s support network.

With the literal obliteration via airstrikes of the Libyan Jamahiriyah government, such targeting immediately exploded into systematic witch hunts against anyone suspected of supporting the Jamahiriyah system and late Leader Muammar Gaddafi. Independent observers have yet to conduct any serious investigation into the number of people killed, detained and tortured since NATO bombed the rebels into Tripoli in late August last year. The agenda is the same in Syria, and of course it is no surprise that the tactics being used are the same, given that the make up of the rebels in Syria and Libya have been confirmed numerous times to be virtually identical. Perhaps the reason the western media have not reported on this crime, on top of the fact that it highlights that the forces their governments are supporting are criminals, is to do with their reluctance to highlight that there is a legitimate opposition in Syria, in this case the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, that is standing firmly with the Ba’ath Party lead by Bashar al-Assad against this imperialist conspiracy. This selective or omissive reporting by the mass mainstream and so-called alternative media is just as criminal as the reports which explicitly fabricate events. The former plays just as much into NATO’s media war and the two forms of reporting complement and reinforce one another.
